About the piece
A song by the Pernambucan composer Alceu Valença, blending northeastern Brazilian rhythms with a devotional, folk-tinged lyric drawn from popular imagery. Its swaying, forró-inflected melody and vivid refrain have made it a staple of the repertoire, and are set here as an arrangement for solo guitar by Luis Leite.
