About the piece
'Chôro da Saudade' is by Agustín Barrios Mangoré (1885-1944), the Paraguayan guitarist-composer who absorbed Brazilian forms into his art. Cast as a choro, it balances a wistful, songful principal theme against more animated passagework, its title's 'saudade' pointing to the bittersweet longing at its heart.
